   Payton Lafayette Coats, son of James Coats and Minerva Catherine Hart, was born 4 June 1854 in Bado, Texas Co., Missouri, and died 17 October 1932 in Lilbourn, New Madrid Co. Co., Missouri [see obituary].  He married Catherine Minerva Hart.  She was born 20 May 1860 in Pope, Illinois, and died 29 May 1932 in Lilbourn, New Madrid Co., Missouri [note 1].

Payton and Catherine had nine children:

1.  Mabel Carrie Coats.
2. Effie Elizabeth Coats was born 5 June 1879 in Hartsville, Pope Co., Illinois, and died 26 June 1956 in Campbell, Dunklin Co., Missouri.  
3. Vidella (Della) Ursue Coats was born 9 December 1880 in Hartsville, Pope Co., Illinois, and died 2 October 1956 in Lilbourn, New Madrid Co. Co., Missouri.  She married Edward Paton Corkran, son of 
4. Ezra Alonzo Coats was born 27 November 1882 in Hartsville, Pope Co., Illinois, and died 9 December 1964 in Pensacola, Escamba Co., Illinois.
5. Sallie Ann Coats was born 28 October 1884 in Hartsville, Pope Co., Illinois, and died in 1946 in Lilbourn, New Madrid Co. Co., Missouri.
6. James Elmer Coats was born 4 October 1886 in Hartsville, Pope Co., Illinois, and died 29 March 1957 in Sikeston, Scott, Missouri.
7. Clarence Grady Coats was born 14 April 1890 in Hartsville, Pope Co., Illinois, and died 5 October 1966 in Marion, Crittenden Co., Arkansas.
8. Ivy Coats was born 15 April 1896 in Hartsville, Pope Co., Illinois, and died in 1899 in Hartsville, Pope Co., Illinois.
9. Harold Loy Coats was born 18 August 1898 in Hartsville, Pope Co., Illinois, and died 17 February 1972 in Forest City, St. Francis Co., Arkansas.
