James Coats was born in 1810 in North Carolina, and died in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee [note 1].    He first married Elizabeth Hart, daughter of Henry Hart and Nancy Rainey, in 1827 in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee.  She was born in1812 in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee, and died in 1859 in Simmons, Texas Co., Missouri. In 1860, he married Cammaliza Forrester in Bado, Texas Co., Missouri.  She was previously married to ----- Crawford.  Cammaliza was born on 19 April 1827 in Harlan Co., Kentucky, and died 28 September in 1921 in Bado, Texas Co., Missouri [note 2].

James and Elizabeth had 13 children:

1. John Henry Coats was born in 1828, in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee.
2. William Coats was born in 1829, in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee. 
3. Polly Ann Coats was born in 1831, in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee.
4. Nancy Coats was born in 1832, in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee.
5. James Denny Coats was born in 1836, in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee.
6. Sarah Coats was born in 1837, in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee.
7. Catherine Coats was born in 1839, in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee, and died in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee.
8. Wilson Coats was born in 1841, in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee.
9. Asa Coats was born in 1842, in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee, and died in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee.
10. Elizabeth Jane Coats was born in 1843, in Big Flat Creek, Bedford Co., Tennessee.
11. Thomas B. Coats was born in 27 Dec 1846, Bado, Texas Co., Missouri, and died in 17 Sep 1926.
12. Tabitha A. Coats was born in 1850, Bado, Texas Co., Missouri, and died in Bado, Texas Co., Missouri.
13. Payton  Lafayette Coats. 

James and Cammazila had six children:

1. Marcus Dural Coats was born 22 May 1861 in Bado, Texas Co., Missouri, and died 20 April 1953 in Milwaukie, Oregon.
2. Asa Clayton Coats was born 18 December 1863 in Wess Farm, Texas Co., Missouri, and died 3 May 1958 in Bado, Texas Co., Missouri.
3. Cordelia Mires Coats was born 7 July 1865 in Bado, Texas Co., Missouri, and died in 15 February 1957 in Salem, Oregon.
4. Camma Coats was born 13 March 1867 in Bado, Texas Co., Missouri, and died 26 December1898 in Illinois.
5. Francis Hill Coats was born 25 October 1873 in Bado, Texas Co., Missouri, and died 22 October 1964 in Bado, Texas Co., Missouri.
6. Wesley B. Coats was born 25 October 1873 in Bado, Texas Co., Missouri, Bado, and died 22 October 1964 inTexas Co., Missouri.
